VT Halter Marine is Awarded Contract to Build Two Containerships for Corwley Maritime

Edward Szeto - Monday, November 25, 2013

Pascagoula, Miss., November 25, 2013 — VT Halter Marine, Inc. (VT Halter Marine), a subsidiary of VT Systems, Inc. (VT Systems), today announced that it has secured a contract with Crowley Maritime Corporation to build two Container Roll-On/Roll-Off (ConRo) ships. The value of this contract is in the region of $350m.

The containerships measure 219.5m long and 32.3m wide, with a depth of 10m featuring the latest systems technology for maximum safety, reliability, and will be powered by environmentally-friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG), setting a new standard for responsible shipping. The vessels will be built at the Pascagoula facility with construction beginning first half of 2014, and deliveries in mid and late 2017.  The vessel design is provided by Wartsila Ship Design.

The ConRo project maintains VT Halter Marine’s backlog and significantly contributes to its long term growth strategy.  VT Halter Marine recently placed a new 12,000 MT Floating Drydock into service providing repair for Oil Field Support Vessels, Barges, Coastal Ships and U.S. Government Vessels, Semi-submersible Drilling Rigs and other Panamax-size Ships.  VT Halter Marine is currently building ten 320’ Platform Supply Vessels for Hornbeck Offshore, a 720’ ConRo ship for Pasha Hawaii Shipping Company, two Articulated Tug Barge units for Bouchard Transportation, four Fast Missile Crafts for NAVSEA, and a T-AGS Class Ocean Surveillance Ship for the U.S. Navy.

“VT Halter Marine is pleased and excited about the award of this contract as we continue our longstanding relationship with Crowley.  The start of these new LNG ConRo ships is a culmination of a lengthy pre-contract engineering and approval cycle, allowing both companies to better understand the complexity of LNG power which results in a ship that fits exactly to Crowley requirements from the start.  This contract signifies how important the Jones Act is to our U.S. operators, shipyards, the support network of suppliers, vendors, and subcontractors which keep Americans employed in the marine industry.  Again, we are most grateful for the confidence Crowley has placed in VT Halter Marine over these many years and we look forward to continuing this relationship for many more years to come.”

VT Halter Marine's Drydock Open Ahead of Schedule

Edward Szeto - Wednesday, November 06, 2013

Pascagoula, Miss. – November 6, 2013 – VT Halter Marine Inc. (VT Halter Marine), a subsidiary of VT Systems, Inc. (VT Systems), today announced its newest facility, a 12,000 MT Floating Drydock, is now open for business and already has its first customers.

The dock, measuring 546 FT in length, 105 FT in breadth and with a depth of 46 FT, is part of an overall expansion plan at the south yard in Pascagoula. This is where VT Halter Marine is adding a repair facility for semi-submersible drilling rigs and Panamax-size ships.

The addition of the Floating Drydock will allow the company to grow into the shiprepair business and start a new stream of revenue to its existing new-build business.  The dock will establish VT Halter Marine as a repair facility.  It will also benefit the U.S. Gulf Coast Ship Repair Capability, as it will be the newest addition to any existing repair facility in the region. VT Halter Marine can now service not only the repair needs of its existing newbuild customers, it will also expand its repair capabilities to new customers and will most likely more than double its customer base for shiprepair business.  VT Halter Marine will now have a similar business model as its counterpart in Singapore, ST Marine, having both newbuild and repair capabilities.

VT Halter Marine expects to create as many as 400 new jobs with the development of this new facility.

“VT Halter Marine is pleased to announce the start of repair operations, making this facility a one stop solution for our customers.”

(VT Systems), today held a christening ceremony for USNS MAURY (T-AGS 66) at its Halter Moss Point facility.  VT Halter Marine is the leading designer and builder of specialized oceanographic ships for the U.S. Navy and has experience in building the previous six ships of the T-AGS 60 Class.

In December 2009, VT Halter Marine was awarded a contract of approximately $87 million to build an enhanced version of the T-AGS 60 Class oceanographic survey ship for the U.S. Navy.  Construction of T-AGS 66 began in September 2010, the keel laying ceremony was held in February 2011, and delivery is expected in January 2014.  The vessel has an additional 24 feet in length to the previous design which will accommodate a moon pool for deployment and retrieval of autonomous underwater vehicles. Designed to perform acoustic, biological, physical, and geophysical surveys, T-AGS 66 will provide the U.S. military with essential information on the ocean environment.

The ship’s sponsor is the Honorable Lisa P. Jackson, former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who as Administrator focused much of her efforts on the BP oil spill that ravaged the Gulf Coast area.

T-AGS 66 is named in honor of Cmdr. Matthew Fontaine Maury, nicknamed “Pathfinder of the Seas,” and also known as the “Father of Modern Oceanography.” The vessel is 353 feet in length with an overall beam of 58 feet, and will be operating under the Military Sealift Command.

“We take great pride in our build history with the T-AGS 60 Class oceanographic vessels for the U.S. Navy.  This vessel, the USNS Maury, is an enhanced version of the prior T-AGS.  We are very pleased to host the christening ceremony for this impressive ship.”

Pascagoula, Miss., April 9, 2012 -- VT Halter Marine, Inc. (VT Halter Marine), a subsidiary of VT Systems, Inc. (VT Systems), today announced it has become a member of the IMAGE program with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The ICE Mutual Agreement between Government and Employers (IMAGE) provides businesses an opportunity to partner with the agency to develop a more secure and stable workforce.

Through its participation in the IMAGE program, VT Halter Marine establishes a formal partnership with law enforcement to follow best hiring practices as the program suggests and to implement staff training to comply with the high standards required by the program. In addition, the participation enables VT Halter Marine to use tools offered by the federal government to screen employees, such as E-Verify, which ensures they are lawfully authorized to work in the US.

"VT Halter Marine is committed to the protection of our workforce. By partnering with IMAGE, we are helping to ensuring a safer and more secure work environment for all of our employees."
